As much as I’d like to be able to justify having a “city girl” wardrobe, my lifestyle is not that. I don’t live in the fashion world, I don’t see a whole lot of people on any given day, and I’ve rarely, if ever, needed a day-to-evening look.

So many of the trend reports and fashion week recaps I see are built around a very metropolitan version of dressing: polished layers, statement coats, heels, oversized bags, and somewhere important to go after 5:00.
In this space, I’d have a hard time selling you on that lifestyle. It’s not me, and I’d venture to guess it’s not the majority of you either. Metaphorically speaking, what I can try to sell you on is denim. Because whether it’s a jacket, jeans, or a shirt, denim fits quite nicely into the life I actually live.
If you saw my October Moodboard post, you’ll recognize a few things making their way into these outfits. This is where the inspiration starts turning into actual outfits.
The Layer
The denim shirt is really a supporting piece in this look, worn under an olive jacket and over a floral skirt. It has snap closures for a touch of Western flair, which I repeated with my boots.
As noted with my October Moodboard, I’ve developed a renewed interest in olive, and I’m really finding myself reaching for it more often. Denim and olive are such a classic color pairing.
Because the jacket is a bit structured, the denim shirt helps keep the outfit casual, while the floral skirt adds some softness and a little more interest. I also like having the shirt peek out at the collar, cuffs, and hem.
The Foundation
The jeans are doing the easiest job of the three denim pieces. They give me a simple base for the argyle cardigan, which was one of the first things I pulled for my October Moodboard. Dark-wash denim is classic and a good choice to keep the sweater from feeling too buttoned-up.
Argyle can lean a little preppy, but with jeans and metallic sneakers, it feels much more like something I’d actually wear day-to-day. The denim keeps the outfit casual and lets the pattern do most of the talking.
This is probably the most straightforward of the three looks, but that doesn’t make it boring. It’s also the one I can see myself reaching for most often when comfort is of the utmost concern.
The Topper
Not that this next outfit is any less comfortable. The denim star in it is the jacket, which is a recent thrift-store find. The pearls scattered across the shoulders and down the sleeves were what caught my eye as I was browsing through the racks. They take a rather ordinary piece and give it just enough embellishment to make it stand out without being over the top.
Did I need another denim jacket? Not a chance. But did I need THIS denim jacket? Oh ya!
In this look, I’m wearing it over a white eyelet top and floral maxi skirt (also a thrift-store find), along with my fringed tan suede boots. This outfit doesn’t tie back quite as directly to the October Moodboard as the other two, but it does fit the way fall actually happens in my area. I’m not necessarily reaching for heavy layers yet, but adding a denim jacket is enough to make a lighter outfit feel a little more seasonal.
Last Thoughts
What I like about all three of these looks is that none of them required anything particularly complicated. The denim pieces are all wardrobe staples, but each one offers something a little different: the shirt adds a layer, the jeans give me a base, and the jacket finishes things off with a little extra personality.
So there you have it: three fall outfits, three different jobs for denim, and not a single requirement that I spend the day wandering through a city with a PSL in one hand, concerned that there’s somewhere important I need to be.
Mrs. Know-It-Fall can live with that. Which look is your favorite, and what denim piece do you reach for most in the fall?

Hi Rena, I so look forward to getting to wear these layered looks. Unfortunately we have been cursed with this unseasonably warm weather here where we live. Other than your argyle sweater I could duplicate all these looks. Great minds! Hope to see you at the Farmer’s Market again someday.
I have to admit to a love for denim jackets myself! But, this pearl jacket is sooo good!! I wouldn’t have bypassed it, either. As for where I’d reach for most often? Definitely jeans followed by a denim/chambray shirt!

You look amazing in the red skirt with denim jacket! Loving denim with olive. It’s good to see looks for those who don’t need city chic or day to evening outfits. Thanks for linking.
I really like your new denim jacket: I was just thinking that an oversize more boxy one would be fun! I also like the denim shirt under the jacket at the top and I am going to have to do that!
