Over the past year or so, I’ve had to come to terms with a few inevitable “end of life” realities. Not the heavy, philosophical kind—more like the kind that involves unexpected shutdowns, dramatic pauses, and a startling amount of sighing. And yes, it’s me doing the sighing.

Last year, I replaced my 7-plus-year-old laptop, and honestly, the poor thing had earned its retirement. The cursor had been misbehaving for years—jumping around like it was auditioning for a dance video—and the only way to get it to settle down was to restart it right after starting it. Every. Single. Time. Not easy to do when the cursor is manically dancing.
And now my cellphone and my 8-plus-year-old tablet have joined the “end of life” club. With a battery that drained too quickly, increasing lag with apps, and performance feeling noticeably dated, my iPhone was overdue for an upgrade. And my iPad, bless its heart, could no longer stay current with iOS updates, frequently disconnected from WiFi, and struggled with even simple tasks. Both have served me well, but the signs were clear: it’s time.
Looking into my replacement options also led me into a realm of interesting accessories I didn’t know existed. I took notice of some that might actually make my tech upgrades easier, smoother, or more enjoyable. Others also caught my attention, and before I knew it, I had a surprisingly useful—and totally unplanned—gift list on my hands. Some were part of a list I’d begun last year, others were new discoveries, but all of them fall into that sweet spot of practical, enjoyable, and genuinely useful. I’m not saying you need any of these, but they’re worth a look if you’re exploring ideas. Most fall in the $15 to $100 range, making them perfect for everything from a Secret Santa gift exchange to a hostess gift to a stocking stuffer you’re scrambling for at the very last minute.
And yes, I realize creating a gift list right around Black Friday might seem a little… contradictory to my usual “no thanks” attitude about the weekend shopping frenzy (and the buy-nothing movement happening this year). Consider this less of a shopping directive and more of a menu of ideas to hold onto in the event you’re trying to come up with something creative and your mind goes blank the moment you open your browser. Also, I haven’t included any links; where (and of course, whether) you choose to shop is entirely up to you.
Practical Tech Upgrades & Everyday Helpers
Oh, what a rabbit hole I was led down during my tech replacement research; so many interesting accessories that I didn’t know existed. I’m not saying you need any of these, but they’re worth a look if you’re exploring ideas.
- Portable Smartphone Charger – A must-have for travel days, long outings, or phones that are entering their “I’m tired… carry me” phase of battery life.
- SnapGrip Mobile Battery – A clever little gadget that adds a comfortable grip for photos and doubles as an external battery. Excellent for everyday snapshots or quick outfit photos.
- USB-C Multiport Hub – Since newer devices seem determined to offer as few ports as possible, this solves a lot of quiet frustrations. Great for connecting accessories or transferring photos.
- Compact Tripod with Bluetooth Shutter – Perfect for selfies, travel photos, outfit shots, or group pictures where you’d like to be in the frame for once.
- Rocketbook Smart Spiral Notebook – For anyone who loves writing by hand but also loves having everything digitized. Reusable, cloud-connected, and endlessly satisfying.
- Portable Solar Charger – Great for travel, outdoor days, emergency kits, or anyone who’s ever had their phone die at the worst possible moment.
- Mini Projector – Transforms a wall into a screen for movie nights, presentations, or impromptu photo slideshows. Fun and surprisingly handy.
- Endoscope/Borescope Camera – A tiny camera on a flexible cable that lets you see into tight spaces—useful for home repairs, car troubleshooting, or satisfying curiosity about where that lost earring actually went.
- Scrolling Ring – A small wearable remote that lets you flip through social media, articles, or e-books without constantly swiping. Great for reading in bed or avoiding hand strain.
Comfort, Calm & Small Daily Luxuries
Even though my initial list was sparked by tech upgrades, not everything that makes life easier needs a battery or a charging cable. Although admittedly, some do 😏. These little luxuries fall firmly into the “make your day just a bit better” category, and sometimes that’s the best kind of gift.
- Scalp Massager – A tiny tool with a big impact. Whether you use it while shampooing or just for a quick tension release, it turns an ordinary moment into a mini spa ritual.
- Acupressure Mat – It looks intimidating, but give it ten minutes and it becomes shockingly relaxing. Great for easing back tension or simply forcing yourself to slow down.
- Alice Nightcap Mushroom Chocolates – A sweet wind-down treat designed to promote rest and relaxation. Perfect for someone who appreciates wellness…but also chocolate.
- Rechargeable Hand Warmers – An eco-friendly upgrade from disposable warmers. Ideal for winter walks, outdoor events, or anyone who says their hands are always cold.
- Heated Eye Mask – Pure bliss for tired eyes, headaches, or stress-filled days. A warm, cozy hug for your face.
- Portable Heated Shawl – Wearable warmth for chilly mornings, drafty offices, or evenings for anyone who’s always feeling a little chilled.
- Neck-Hanging Portable Fan – Cool comfort that’s hands-free; perfect for travel, outdoor events, gym days, or anyone who runs warm.
- Gravity Cube Timer – Flip it to start a 5-, 10-, 15-, or 30-minute timer. A simple, satisfying tool for productivity, mindfulness, or timed breaks.
- Portable Electric Kettle – Heats water quickly wherever you are and whenever you need it. Great for tea lovers, instant soups, or travelers who like control over their hot beverages.
Fun, Quirky, & Oh-Why-Not Items
Every good gift list needs a few wild cards, right? These are the items that aren’t essential, aren’t serious, and absolutely aren’t boring. Just pure, whimsical fun.
- Burger Socks – A playful little stocking stuffer; colorful, funny, and guaranteed to bring a smile. Other food options are available as well.
- LED Acrylic Message Board – Leave glowing notes, reminders, or little doodles. A fun desk accessory that’s both cute and practical.
- Vampire Umbrella – A dramatic, gothic-inspired umbrella shaped like bat wings. Equal parts functional and fabulously extra.
- Tetris Puzzle Lamp – Stack the pieces however you like; each one lights up when it touches another. It’s a nostalgic, rearrangeable mood light.
- Super Bros Night Light – A whimsical, retro-gaming nod that adds personality to any nightstand or workspace.
- Olight RGB Light Sphere – A small, color-changing orb that creates instant ambiance. Surprisingly soothing and great for cozy vibes.
- Fire Blanket – A practical safety item most people don’t own—but should. Useful for kitchens, campers, or emergency kits.
- LifeStraw Sip – A compact water filter that lets you sip clean, safe water directly from the source. Great for travel, hiking, or emergencies.
What I’m Wearing For Thanksgiving Dinner
Since this post is coming out on Thanksgiving, this is exactly what I’ll be wearing later today, ready for great food and good company. My rule for holiday dressing is simple: comfortable enough to enjoy the meal, cute enough to feel festive, and practical enough for everything from cooking to couch time.
This floral dress checks every box. It has an easy, relaxed fit that flows and feels feminine without being fussy (and it has pockets!). When I bought it two years ago, the fit was much more snug. Today, I’ve got it temporarily pinned while it awaits a final alteration (yay me!) I’ve layered it with a black denim jacket for a bit of structure and warmth—plus, a denim jacket just works with everything.
Next, can we talk about the boots? These tall brown faux-suede ones with fringe down the sides (from my Fall collection) might be my favorite part; fun, a little dramatic, and incredibly comfortable to walk, stand, or sit in for hours (which is essential on a day built around lingering at the table). With tights and the jacket, the whole look feels cozy, polished, and perfectly suited to a fall holiday. To finish the ensemble, a trio of brooches I’ve had for several years adds a bit of sparkle and a touch of personality.

Funny enough, what started as a simple round of tech replacements ended up revealing a handful of small things that make a surprisingly big difference in daily life. Nothing dramatic, nothing life-changing, but certainly life-improving. If any of these suggestions spark an idea for you—or for someone on your list—then at least something good came out of my devices reaching their “end of life.” Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I had to buy a phone last month, unexpectedly as my battery completely died and wouldn’t charge at all, since it would have cost $100 to get the photos transferred, and then I would still need a new phone, I went ahead and got a new one. It wasn’t as exciting as it usually would have been as I had planned to wait one more year to get a new phone. I even got the same boring case.
Love your Thanksgiving outfit and those boots are just plain fun!
