Packed away in a box labeled for Poshmark was a treasure trove of denim jackets as well as one decidedly flouncy and flirty skirt. A glance in my closet will attest to my fondness of denim jackets for I have a bunch of them in a variety of hues and styles.

Most of them were bought in thrift stores, and frankly, I used to find that a bit mind-boggling. Why would someone get rid of something so lovely? Now, I do realize that personal taste may change over time or that an item doesn’t fit as it once did. Perhaps the jacket no longer sparked joy for its previous owner. No matter, I’m happy to give it a new home or pass it along to another via Poshmark.

Whether it’s a dusted-off treasure from years past, or an item that was bought from a thrift store, or perhaps a well-worn favorite that’s been given new life, that fashion find is covered under the Reclaim-Recycle-Reuse theme. The box in question (as well as several others) had been packed back in the Fall of 2018. That was when The Husband and I had been in midst of buying our current home and selling the previous one. Decluttering is a must in those situations so that prospective buyers might believe that the rooms, closet space, and such, would be sufficient for their needs.

As suggested in the title, this post is an ode to the wonder that is called a denim jacket. There are endless cuts, fits, and details that make them quite a versatile piece for any wardrobe. So I did try my hand at writing a poem.

Sundry shades of blue to mix and match
Slim or boxy, denim jackets are always on point.
Sometimes bleached or distressed,
Crisp and stiff, or a soft counterpoint

Easy choice in the spring and summer
For a look suitable to any style or occasion
Classic, timeless, unquestionably cool
Forever a trend, never out of fashion.

As for specifics on this look, along with the denim jacket and the skirt, the sandals were also a thrift store find. Vince Camuto, no less. Leather, too, and so comfortable to wear. Each of those strap buckles are functional so I can adjust them to my sometimes hard-to-fit foot. They’ve appeared on the blog previously in the Fall of 2017, Last Week, This Week: Skirting The Issue – October 16-20 and in one of my last workplace outfits from a little over year ago in Last Week, This Week: Pop Quiz, March 2-6.

The denim jacket and skirt were both originally from Chico’s. Surprisingly, I find a lot of Chico’s items in thrift stores. I especially like flouncy and flirty skirts that Chico’s often sells so I often find buying them hard to resist when I run across them at thrift stores. And their jackets usually have fabulous details but I typically pass on ones without pockets. My top with its front tie detail was purchased at Ann Taylor Factory Store and both of the necklaces I bought years ago at J Jill, back when their stores had fountains in them. Remember that set-up?

For your viewing pleasure, above is an assortment of looks from over the years of the various denim jackets in my wardrobe. And this is just a sampling. The photos are not in chronological order as you can tell by the color and length of my hair.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. My featured blogger from last week is Lucy, who hails from Montreal and blogs about her outfits, as well as her fondness for designer, vintage, and thrifted clothing at Lucybertoldi.com.

Where do denim jackets rank for you as a wardrobe staple? What’s your opinion on thrift store and resell shopping?  Does the idea of wearing someone else’s old clothes give you the heebie-jeebies?  Is it just a passing trend for those who can afford more or is it a smart way to live “greener” and reduce one’s carbon footprint?

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

It’s funny to remember that I once thought of denim jackets being a bold fashion choice and now it’s a can’t-live-without staple.

  2. I love the faded color of that denim jacket. The layered necklace(s) against the dark top look great. I’ve pinned this look!

Thank you, Sally. I’m thrilled that you like the look.

It’s a puzzlement that requires additional research (aka thrift store shopping 😉).

Rena, I love this look and of course the denim jacket! I have managed to collect about a dozen different denim jackets in different washes, colors, and cuts. They are so timeless and work with just about everything in my wardrobe. I have even paired a denim jacket with a formal gown. Because why the heck not? It’s fun and modern! I think most of my denim jackets are thrift store finds as well. They are hard to resist when they are all soft and perfectly broken in. Great post! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

A denim jacket with a formal gown sounds like a fabulous idea. And you’re right, why the heck not!

Hey!! Thanks so much for featuring me- I’m delighted!! we have the same taste- I’m crazy about that skirt you’re styling and I can’t believe you’ll be letting go of that jacket! But I know the feeling:) And excuse me but what I’m really crazy about is your hair- you have the most gorgeous hair ever!!

    • Rena

You’re most welcome, Lucy. And thank you for the hair love ☺

  5. I always have had a denim jacket and they last for decades with me. Love it with that beautiful skirt. Black and denim is such a great combination especially a black dress. Happy Sunday!

    • Rena

I also think that black and denim make for a great combination.

    • Thank you so much, Jill. I have several and some for a number years, too.

This year I have worn my denim jackets more than ever and I feel like I have added a new one each year for the past several years. I do love fun and flouncy skirts too! I feel like I have been wearing skirts or dresses for the past week. Enjoying the new and old variety in my closet.

  7. I see tons of denim jackets in the thrift stores too – why would anyone ever buy new!? I have only one denim jacket now, and it’s dyed baby blue and is covered in studs (it’s a vintage Dolce & Gabbana, and yes, thrifted!!). I’m also a sucker for swooshy, flouncy and full skirts. We see a bit of Chico’s second-hand here in Canada, but not a ton (no stores by them here).

I shop 99% second-hand, have done so for years and years. I give away my old clothes: first to my friends, then to my coworkers, and then I donate the rest to charity. I love the idea of someone “discovering” my stuff as a treasure for themselves. I rarely consign, although I’ve considered it with some of my vintage. Mostly I find that to be too much hassle.

Fun to see you throughout the years of your denim, Rena! The hair journey is always a hoot when I do the same. 🙂

    • Sheila, you have an amazing collection of jackets. I especially like your embellished ones and often think that I should attempt a DIY project with one or more of my denim jackets.

You have some great thrift finds! I love the shoes and a denim jacket is a closet must have.

  9. Hi Rena!
Love this look on you! I have found all of my denim jackets on Poshmark. I would like a light one. The dress is fab on you and I love the hem fabric. Those shoes too! Just perfect in black and white, they were meant to go with that dress!
