On a day when several inches of sunshine was falling in my part of the country, I thought to try out the dress over pants trend. Like the winter-to-spring transition looks shown in last Saturday’s Fresh Focus: Bomber Jacket post, the light layers of this outfit make it a great option for a day when there might be unexpected temperature changes.
Would You, Could you? is the theme for the second Saturday of the month. Such is the question one might ask of oneself when happening upon fashion inspirations in magazine articles, store displays, or social media. Or you might find inspiration in an unexpected place like a sunset, or a desert landscape, or a plate of food. Sometimes it might just be the heap of cast-offs in your closet.
In the case of this ensemble, I don’t recall the specific origin of the inspiration as it has been popping up here and there for a while. And it’s been around for a few years, typically being showcased during seasonal transition periods as a way to continue to wear a few favorites as the weather changes.
All of the pieces in this look were “shopped from my closet” with the exception of my crossbody purse. It was one of the recent new-to-me purchases I shared last week in Thrift Store Finds And OOTDs: February 2021. The jacket is a couple of years old and I mostly wore it as a completer piece for work. It had been in the discard pile for a while but may have earned itself a temporary reprieve.
The dress was in another layered seasonal transition look that I shared last October in Fresh Focus: Buffalo Plaid. I might call the pants a “thrift store find” because they were bought at a Goodwill. But that location was one of the boutique ones that also sells new items which is what these pants were. In any case, I wrote about that adventure in Boutique Shopping, Goodwill Prices.
These pants are a bit long so I’ve knotted them at the ankle to make them a more manageable length to wear with lower heels. They were first shared on the blog just about five years ago in Boho Florals (Part 2). You can see how long they are on me in the photos below and in each, I’m wearing sandals with over 3″ heels. I hadn’t looked at these photos before I put together today’s look but there appears to be a consistency to my styling of them.
Lest you think that I was flaunting local mandates regarding masks, I only removed mine for the photos. There was hardly anyone around when these photos were taken, but nevertheless, all precautions were observed.

I’ve never worn a dress over trousers but I like the way you’ve done it – the red and white adds an extra dimension to the outfit. Thanks for the link up!
I’m glad that you like this look.
Now, I wear long tunics over jeggings and leggings all the time. Would I wear them over palazzos? There is this pattern that I’ve been considering making for a year but the questions is long dress over full length palazzo or a shorter dress over a cropped palazzo. So yes, I will definitely, if I can ever make up my mind which one I want to go with. I might have enough fabric to make all four pieces, but that is probably going just a little bit overboard.
I didn’t realize that this was a thing. Thanks for bring this topic up. I like these, “would you-could you” posts. Take care, Terri
Honestly, I’m a bit on the fence about wearing a dress over wide-leg pants. But I had to give it a try anyway. Thank you for letting me know that you’re enjoying these “would you, could you” posts.
Thank you so much for featuring me. I feel so honored. You made my day.
It was my pleasure to do so and you are most welcome, Nicole.
These look lovely. They look so comfy and stylish too. Thanks so much for hosting 🙂
Thank you, Claire.
I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOOOOVE tie dye! And these pants are awesome! They look soooo good on you!!
Thank you so much. I got a lot of compliments on them when I wore them recently while out and about running errands.
I wear tunics over leggings all the time, so I definitely would have no trouble wearing a dress over pants. Really, really like those tie dyed palazzos.

Michelle, they are pretty fabulous. And to think, they’d been hanging unworn for so long in my closet. I’m aiming to fix that.
I love how you tied up the pants this way too Rena.

The tried-n-true trick of a short gal 😉
Oh yes, I love to wear a dress over trousers. I used too do that decades so and everyone thought I was weird. Lol.
You weren’t weird … just ahead of the times and a trendsetter.
Rena, these pants are fabulous! I love the red tie dye. And you know I love a dress over pants ! This outfit made me recall those green floral pants that we both have and did a joint styling post about a few years back. I wore a tee shirt dress and long cardigan over my pants in that post! I also just recently found a pair of tie dye palazzo pants at the thrift shop but it has still been too cold to wear them. But I may definitely try a denim dress over them after this post! Thanks for the inspiration.

Totally fun pants and outfits!
Thank you, Amy.
Those pants are so cute! I’m loving how you tied the ends, such a great way to come up with a “new” look. Thanks for hosting this link up!
Life is a Shoe
This is such a fun look! Your palazzo pants are so cute! What a good idea to tie up the hems when they are too long. I need to try that. Thank you for the linkup!

I’ve always liked the look of dresses with pants. I’ve done it a few times myself, especially jeans!

I’m so glad you like the look.
Those are super cute palazzo pants!
Thank you, Jamie.
I just love how you knotted the pants at the ankle… it’s super cute!! I have also worn pants with dresses and the relaxed casualness of it really makes a statement. Super cute and inspiring!!!!
I’m glad you like the look. The knots were a necessity because the pants would be too long on me otherwise 😂
