Is there any more common pairing than shoes and socks? If you subjected a random group of your friends to a word association game, I’ll bet that 9 of 10 would respond with socks for the word shoes.
With the restart of the Fine-Whatever Link-Up, Would You, Could you? is the theme for the second Saturday of the month. Such is the question one might ask of oneself when happening upon fashion inspirations in magazine articles, store displays, or social media. Or they might find inspiration in an unexpected place like a sunset, or a desert landscape, or a plate of food.ย Sometimes it might just be the heap of cast-offs in your closet.
In the case of this ensemble, I’ve been seeing socks of all sorts paired up with footwear of all sorts lately. Mostly, it’s been tube socks with slide sandals which, as a style statement, isn’t my cup of tea. Other combinations have been popping up as well. In the realm of comfort, performance socks and sneakers are a given but what an option like anklets and oxfords?
These oxfords were a purchase of desperation about four years ago. The Husband and I were in NYC for a cousin’s daughter’s Bat Mitzvah and I didn’t plan my footwear with consideration for much walking. Nor had I thought to bring more walking suitable shoes along with me that day. So when we found ourselves with a few hours to kill in mid-Manhattan, the pumps I had been wearing became quite painful which necessitated an emergency footwear purchase.
While I’ve often worn these oxfords sans socks, I do like the look of wearing them with socks. Especially light-colored ones for the contrast they create. Especially when they are glimpsed from under the leg of a pair of slacks. And speaking of slacks, I selected these bright-print ones with a nod to Valentine’s Day due to the bold pink in the pattern. From there, a blazer seemed a good choice to play upon the classic style of my slacks.
But this is no ordinary black blazer. The outer fabric is lace (the texture can be seen in the photo below). It was a thrift store find from a few years ago. Jackets and blazers are the racks that I always browse through in thrift stores and I couldn’t pass this gem even though it doesn’t have pockets. Jackets/blazers/coats without pockets seem like a waste of material, IMHO. But I digress.
Shoes, socks, slacks, blazer … next choice to make was a top. Initially, I thought to go with a collared button-down white blouse but then this collarless eyelet one caught my eye. I like the look of a popped collar under a blazer but it’s good to mix things up a bit at times. Finishing off the details, I opted for a floral brooch that I’ve had for a long time and a pair of sparkly earrings.
Outfit details: Blazer – Style & Co, thrifted; Blouse – Old Navy, bought last year; Slacks – H&M, 2020 holiday clearance; Socks – Famous Footwear; Oxfords – Aldo, 2016; Earrings – Betsy Johnson, 2020 holiday clearance; Brooch, ???

Hello, Rena-oh yes, I wear socks. I’m working on knitting another pair of wool socks at this moment. I can’t resist beautiful sock yarn but it does take me forever to knit a pair! I buy and wear fun socks too; alpaca, sheep, poodles and cats are my favorite motifs. Also, in my book, everyone needs a good pair of black, white and gray socks in their drawer.
Thank you for featuring me this week. What a nice surprise! Take care, Terri
We are kindred spirits.
Love socks – glittery, patterned, fishnet- and patterned hosiery with shoes, particularly brogues (Oxfords). Have added a post relevant to your theme on my collection of quirky shoes.
I’m glad to hear that you also like shoes with socks.
I typically wear socks that you cannot see. Don’t own any tights but wouldn’t mind a pair. Love how you outfit came together, that eyelet blouse is very pretty.

Visible socks is an untapped styling option.
I’m wearing lace kind a socks right now. Kneehigh, under my culotte. Thanks for hosting and have a great weekend!
I like the idea of lace socks.
Oh, I have many stories like that Rena….my husband used to think I did it on purpose. But at least I’ve gotten smarter now when I pack, LOL!!

LOL, I felt like a country bumpkin in the big city for not thinking to plan ahead.
I’m wearing more colorful socks these days and my tights too are getting funkier…it’s all this lock down, we need some fun- even if it’s socks lol! I’m loving your pants btw- so fun!
My pants are a story for another time but I agree, they’re pretty special.
Super cute outfit, Rena! You know I love all sorts of socks and footwear combinations! I do like ankle socks paired with brogues peeking out from underneath trousers or maxi skirts. I also like lacy ankle socks paired with pumps and other funky hosiery paired with sandals. I have always, always had a thing for crazy socks and leggings and shoes! I really like the lace blazer, too. That’s a fabulous thrift shop find! I also go for the blazer and coat racks first when I am out thrifting as well! Great post!

Yes, I knew that you would relate to this post. It would be so fun to go thrift shopping with you.
I usually wear no show socks but it’s also fun to see colorful or textured socks peeking out a the ankle! Love your floral pants!
Jill – Doused in Pink
I typically go for a no sock look as well but it’s fun to mix things up.
I’m happy to hear that socks with shoes are coming back in style because when you live in a cold climate like I do you need to wear socks with your shoes! Love those fun pants.
I agree, socks would be a must in really cold weather.
Very cute outfit! I love the floral slacks! As for socks, I typically wear boots or booties in the winter, so they usually donโt show. I think your socks and oxfords combination looks great!

Thank you. I’m glad that you like it, Michelle.
I wear socks! I live in Chicago and we have much snow everywhere right now. And you do present an awesome picture. I would probably pair the shoes with black socks. But I know socks and shoes that support me are definitely in my present and my future. IF–I were going to be sitting most of an evening, I would do flats and in summer sandals. But I’ll keep you posted, LOL.
I plan to try socks with sandals and other types of shoes.
To me, foot comfort is queen any more if I’m not barefoot. I love to walk and can’t stand doing it in uncomfortable shoes. There are so many fun pairs of sox to wear and my heels don’t get cracked and ugly when I do.
I couldn’t agree more with you about the importance of foot comfort. Since I’ve retired and no longer wear “office shoes” every day, my feet have never been happier.
Those shoes look like a great emergency shoe buy! They are so nice with the blazer and floral pants! ๐ I am not a sock and sandal fan but I do wear socks with my sneakers! ๐
Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! Hope that you are having a good weekend, it’s a hot day here today ๐
I have yet to try socks and sandals but I might give it a spin.
