The renewed popularity of the denim skirt should not come as a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to fashion articles and reportings of celebrity styles of late.
Denim’s timeless appeal is usually attributed to its durability and versatility, and of course, comfort. Stylistically, it has become associated with subcultures like cowboys, rock ‘n’ roll, and rebellion, which has contributed to its enduring popularity. Denim’s association with these iconic images and cultural movements has given denim a sense of attitude, authenticity, and coolness that resonates with people of all ages.
Personally, I adore all things denim, from jackets to dresses to footwear, purses, and even household furnishings. I saw a TikTok the other day of the making of a denim table top. The craftsperson laminated 50 layers of denim and the results looked awesome. But I digress. Today’s topic of interest is denim skirts.
Long, short, or somewhere in between, you might want to consider giving this comeback star a try this summer. Like with your favorite pair of jeans or shorts, the OOTDs options are endless. However, in comparison to its legged cousins, a denim skirt is a more intentional choice and can easily be dressed up or down making it an option for most occasions.
Taking note of revived denim skirt craze, especially midi/maxi length ones, I set out to find one for myself. Oddly, a search through my usual go-to retailers turned up very few options. When I expanded my search, I did find some but they seemed a bit pricy so I held off. Good fortune hit one day as I was in a thrift store and came upon the skirt that I’m wearing in this post. I don’t recognize the brand and from a bit of internet sleuthing, I think that it’s mostly carried at discount stores like TJMaxx and SteinMart.
Not quite the midi/maxi I’d hope to find, but it’ll do for now. This knee-length hemline is about as short as I would go with any skirt and the tapered silhouette is more flattering to my figure than an A-line or a flare would be. Originally, I was planning to show just one look for my denim skirt but as I was putting it together, other ideas popped into my head that I wanted to try as well. I couldn’t decide which I liked better so all three have been included in this post.
In all three looks, I’m wearing this cropped button-down shirt that I found while on my denim skirt hunt. For this first look, I’ve paired that combo with a Talbot’s gingham jacket which is also a recent thrift store find, a Talbot’s scarf I bought on sale a few years ago, and my white woven wedge sandals that I bought a year ago.
Next up is the skirt/top combo with my tie-dye kimono that I first shared a year ago in Whatโs The Story?. I wore my white woven wedge sandals in that post as well. My sandals in today’s post are by Eurosoft and the kimono is by Lucky Brand.
And last up is the initial outfit I’d put together for my denim skirt. My jacket has appeared on the blog previously (see Skincare Routine and Old Habits Die Hard) and is yet another that was a thrift store find. Most of the jackets I own were bought second-hand. My belt was also a thrift store find (tip: always check the men’s belt rack if you’re looking for quality leather ones) and I bought my shoes on Poshmark after seeing a similar pair/style in the brand’s retail store.

I’ve never owned a denim skirt, but have often thought that I’d like one. Perhaps this is the time to get serious about looking for one, especially if I can find it second-hand!
I have been trying to find a denim skirt that works with the body I have now (I have several that don’t currently fit). But, I’m like you…coming up with nothing! It’s amazing they are in such short supply given how they are so on trend right now. Thanks for the link party! I hope you’ll come visit for the Songful Style link up!

I always have a hard time with the fit on a denim skirt but I love the look. That gingham jacket from Talbot’s is perfection but honestly, all 3 ways you’ve styled your skirt look great!

Great styling ideas. It’s easy to forget how versatile denim skirts are.

I have two denim skirts that I wear year-round so I am 100% on board with this trend. I surprised myself with how much I liked the outfit with the brown jacket – it looks great with the brown belt and the brown detail on the striped flats.
I have two denim skirts right now, a light wash midi length one with a split in front and a darker one about knee length. I really like my lighter more right now but it is fun to have the options.

Love this denim skirt on you, it is so flattering in all three outfits! I have two denim skirts that I love and wear quit a bit. I would like to add a midi length one, but as popular as they are right now, there don’t seem to be that many for sale. Will continue to hunt. Thanks for the inspiration, and enjoy your week!
I love denim skirts a lot, in stead of jeans. And I like all the looks! The lenght of the skirt suits you very well!
These are all fun styles! I’m going to have to be on the lookout for a maxi denim skirt.
I love denim but don’t currently have a denim skirt – but I’m always looking in our local thrift shops. You look great in denim and I especially like the last outfit with the longer jacket.
This is lovely, I’ve got a fab skirt that I’ve worn a few times already. Will have to get it out again now you’ve reminded me. Jacqui x
Rena, I’ve long regretted giving away my last denim skirt (a long time ago). I love yours! I think that silhouette is a good look for you. Nice outfits, all. Thank you for hosting.
The skirt looks great on you! I love the tie dye kimono too!
