While the specifics elude me now, the idea for winter’s frost as my style prompt for this month’s Fresh Focus post came from an online piece I came across recently. It was the use of a crystalline shade of blue along with the expected snowy whites and silvery grays that really caught my attention.

Winter’s frost isn’t a condition I have to contend with much in my little corner of the world. But like many, I’m not immune to the romanticism of a snowy landscape. As we might embrace tropical motifs in warmer months, I was similarly inspired to create a look the reflects on the lighter side of the cold, dark days of January.

Once I’d settled on “winter’s frost”, I immediately thought of the skirt you see in these photos which is part of a two-piece set that I bought at a thrift store for $15 back in October. Its matching top is sleeveless with a rounded neckline and it’s made from the lighter solid blue material you see in the skirt. Together, the two pieces would be fine for a Spring/Summer boho-inspired look and that’s why I didn’t include to top in this winter’s frost outfit.

The skirt has a lining so it becomes winter-appropriate for a SoCal winter day when paired with boots and a cozy sweater. However, in truly frosty weather, I’d likely be wearing fleeced-lined tights underneath as well as a puffy jacket, scarf, and gloves. Or maybe I’d just stay inside.

The rest of the items in this outfit are a mix of retail and secondhand purchases that I already owned and most have been shared in previously. My fringed mid-calf boots are Rebecca Minkoff’s that I bought on clearance two years ago and first appeared in Fresh Focus: Ruffles. My blouse is the other retail purchase that was made early in 2020. I liked the fit and style so much that I bought it in two other colors as well and I wear all three frequently.

The long cardigan is by Lucky Brand and made an appearance in my Instagram feed back in September 2020. It was a pre-COVID thrift store find that I originally thought I would resell but decided to keep instead. Both the purse (seen here in 5 Valuable Tips For Online Resell Buyers) and the necklace were bought using some of my profits on Poshmark.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. My featured blogger from last week’s link-up post is Nancy, the blogger you likely recognize from Nancy’s Fashion Style. With her tagline of “because clothes don’t look good on a hanger”, Nancy is walking the talk with her pairing of blue and brown into a stylishly cozy look.

Have I made my case for embracing a bit of winter’s frost into your look this season? I’m interested in hearing about where your focus is these days, style-wise. Are you staying only with what’s current or do you revisit the favorites that have worked in the past? What details are staples in your wardrobe? And with the start of 2022, how have your fashion choices changed since this time last year?

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Looks wonderful. I am having a frumpy winter’s frost day here in the snow, so I will go have a look in my closet and see if I can find an inspiring outfit!

  3. Delicately frosty and pretty Rena. It has been a relatively mild Winter for the UK until now but the temperature is set to plummet from tomorrow. So wardrobe choices will change quickly!
Happy New Year to you and thanks for your hospitality over the past year. I look forward to checking in on Mondays from now on.

I love this skirt, Rena. The Boho vibe is so appealing. And you’ve created such a cozy outfit around it. Awesome!

We had our first snow since we moved to Asheville. It’s been 5 years since I lived anywhere that truly has winter, and I’m still figuring out my winter clothing needs.

Michelle, it should be quite the adventure to sort it out. I faced a similar challenge when we moved a few years ago although not to quite the same extreme. Even so, the climate by the beach is different than the high desert climate I used to live in.

What a lovely surprise to be featured here, thank you very much Rena! I love that skirt, especially with those boots.

Marsha, sometimes I feel a little silly wearing skirts even though I do adore them. Like perhaps they’re a bit too dressy for just casual living but then I just shake those thoughts out of my head.

  8. What a pretty skirt! I really like blue and white together, and of course I love all the textures in this outfit. it looks perfect for the mild winters we have here in Brisbane! 🙂

    Thanks for the link up!

Hope that 2022 is off to a good start for you! 🙂

I absolutely love this color scheme and had to snap a picture of your outfit. What is the brand of the skirt: it is calling my name and wondering if I can find something similar either on poshmark or ebay… It is really cool! Wearing all the skirts on Instagram this week and wishing we had snow now that it got cold again but is has missed us.

Mireille, there is no label on the skirt (or top) so I don’t know the brand. If I did, I’d be looking for more from them too.

  10. What a cool look this is, Rena! I love the fringed boots (Rebecca Minkoff does shoes???) and all the uneven hems in this are just lovely.

    Happy New Year!

Sheila, I’m a bit tardy with this reply but happy new year to you as well. It was the combination of the piece work as well as the uneven hem that sold me on the skirt.

You look fantastically frosty in this! The asymmetrical skirt and long cardigan emulate the points of snowflakes and ice perfectly! What fun inspiration!

Thank you, Laura. Would you believe that I’d put the cardigan in my giveaway/sell pile? It seems that I can’t decide if I love it or only kind of like it.

Oooh Rena, I love this winter boho look! That skirt is magnificent and I look forward to seeing it styled with the matching top for a summer boho look. I am loving your fringed Rebecca Minkoff boots, too. I would totally wear an outfit like this for a festival! You look fabulous, my friend. And that was a super fun style prompt, too.

Shelbee, this would be a fun look for a festival. Or I could try the skirt with my cowboy boots. Now that’s an idea.
