In the early days of this blog, I mused on whether combat boots were age-appropriate for a woman of a “certain maturity”. That woman being me, of course. When the memory of that post came to mind as I was writing Invested In Style: Magnificent 8 Collaboration, it occurred to me that perhaps it was time to revisit that topic.
In Age-Appropriate: Can Your Mother Wear Combat Boots?, my conclusion had been that I needed to do some shopping and find a pair thatโs โme-appropriateโ. Granted, that’s no great epiphany but my explorations and self-reflection had led me to the realization that nothing is off the table. No matter our age, one’s primary concern should be to please ourselves.
I’ll get to the details of today’s look in a moment but first, I hope you’ll indulge me for a moment as my thoughts take this discussion in a slightly different direction. While the decisions on age-appropriateness are more personal than anything else, it can be worthwhile to step back and look at a situation from a different perspective. More specifically, I’ve been giving considerable thought to the format of my blog, both its design and content. In the same way that we sometimes need to view ourselves as others see us in order to evolve our style, I’ve been doing some self-reflection regarding my posts. Have no fear, I’m not going anywhere and I’ll share more on this topic soon.
Back to the details on today’s look. My combat boots were a fabulous clearance bargain purchase I made this past Spring. Although they were my size, I’d originally planned to list them on Poshmark but changed my mind when I realized how gosh darn cute they are. Besides, the combination of brown and black (in snakeskin, no less) is one of my favorites and they are a great option for outfits with that color match up. The paisley print skirt was a thrift store find from earlier this year. The woven brown and black leather purse was also a thrift store find but from several years ago.
My faux-leather jacket is one that I’ve had for several years and it’s the first one I ever bought. Even though it was rather inexpensive, much consideration went into that purchase. Mostly, my concerns centered around whether it fit my style and the whole age-appropriateness thing. Until my recent weight loss, the fit of this jacket had been a bit too snug and I’m glad to be able to wear it again. Finishing details include a pair of necklaces I found on Poshmark a few months ago and an extra-long braided belt that I knotted over near the buckle.
Let’s Wrap This Up
Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. My featured blogger from last week’s link-up post is Alli, part of the dynamic daughter and mom duo you’ll find at Simply Small Town. On their blog, you’ll find Alli writing about her experiences of learning how to adult and sharing her passion for finding ways to connect with struggling youth which she does as a middle school counselor. She also has a knack for finding trendy, affordable fashion and isn’t afraid to share.
Are you ready to work combat boots into your style? And for that matter, where do you sit on the subject of age-appropriateness when it comes to clothing choices?
Stay well and letโs keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin โฆ all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Wow these combat boots are among the nicest I have seen. Love the entire look.
Like you I held off buying combat boots. But I saw so many women looking great in them I changed my mind. I love them with “delicate” skirts. Yours are fab, the two tone and snakeskin makes them very special!
I love combat boots. They’re the perfect in between shoe – not too dressy or to casual and when worn with skirts somehow makes any woman’s legs look good.
I too think that age appropriate fashion is more personal than anything else, after all you’re simply as old as you feel!
Oooh, Rena, I love this outfit! Your paisley skirt is a gorgeous thrifty find and those boots are simply divine! I love that they are snakeskin and the color is stunning. I like that you are reevaluating the direction of your blog. I think itโs important to maintain that level of self introspection. It helps us grow as humans! My blog has recently shifted to an attitude of โI have no effs left to give and so I am just sharing it all as real as can be!โ Keep on shining, my friend!

ha ha! I love the title of this post, and you look fabulous in your combat boots. I remember YEARS ago some blogger saying women over 40 shouldn’t wear combat boots and they should choose a low pointy heeled boot instead. I replied, “I live in Wisconsin (she lived in Texas) where snow, sleet, and ice are a daily safety issue. I would never wear the boots you say are age appropriate because I would slip and fall in them. I wear combat boots!” I even wore combat boots to church last week…with a short skirt and tights!
I like the black and brown together! Those are great boots and I agree whatever our age we should wear things that are “me-appropriate”, that’s a great term! ๐ We need to be comfortable with what we wear.
Thanks for the link up!
Hope that you had a wonderful weekend! We had a great one staying at Sea World on the Gold Coast ๐
Combat boots look so fantastic! I love them and wear them all the time! And you always look damn cool too me! Enjoy your day!
You know, that’s an interesting question. I’m 64 years old and feeling like there’s not much I can’t wear theoretically. Would I wear a mini skirt? Nope…I don’t have good legs and wouldn’t feel comfortable. Would I wear shredded jeans? Yep…I have a couple of pairs and love wearing them (when it’s warm enough). This summer, on a vacation to Hilton Head, I wore a modified bikini and felt just fine. I think the answer is in how comfortable do we feel in the clothing. Another consideration is significant others. For the most part, I don’t ask my husband what he thinks. But, if he specifically said he didn’t like something and had a pretty good reason for it, I’d consider it. I think the days of rules are over!

Yes, I think we can wear whatever we want to wear as long as it makes us feel good! I think you are rocking those boots!
YES YES YES, Rena!!! I adore combat boots and have several pairs that I wear all the time in the winter. Yours are gorgeous and I love how you styled them with the skirt. Absolutely fabulous! I’m so happy you decided to keep them!

Love the combat boots outfit! Iโd better – I have three pairs; none in black.
I love this outfit! The skirt is really cute and I think you are rocking the boots. I agree, brown and black patterned shoes are perfect because they go with so much.
