The color combination of red, white, and blue is iconic. There are 29 countries whose flags contain just those colors. In terms of symbolism, red signifies valor and bravery, white represents purity and innocence, and blue suggests vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

With the upcoming summer Olympics, the flags of many countries will be proudly flown as athletes are awarded their medals. This weekend in the US, a whole host of homes and neighborhood streets will be decked out with “the stars and stripes” as well as festive red, white, and blue decor in celebration of the 4th of July. And of course, many of us will opt to show our patriotism by wearing said color combination.

Which was why I was so thrilled when I came across this global-inspired print dress a few weeks ago while out and about enjoying a bit of retail therapy. (I think it’s sold out but this one is still available and just as pretty.) I don’t have a lot of red in my wardrobe and certainly not a dress with such a bold pattern.

A lot of dresses with drawstring/elastic waistbands don’t fit me well because I’m a bit short-waisted as well as busty. That combination means that there’s often a lot of extra poofiness of fabric in the back even if the waist hits me in about the right place. Fortunately for me, this dress has more of an empire-type waist which I find can be more forgiving in fit.

In completing the look, I opted for a looser fit long denim jacket that’s been hanging around in my closet for a few years mostly unworn. I definitely need to wear this jacket more often. For a necklace, I picked one with medallions of various sizes that echo the geometry of the neckline of the dress. And when it came to deciding on my footwear, I thought I’d give the idea of wearing boots in Summer a try. My blue suede ankle booties seemed like a great choice.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. My featured blogger from last week is Anne M Bray, the talented artist and fashionista who says that her blog, SpyGirl, is a live Fashion Art performance piece. It was Anne who drew the sketch of me that I used in the creation of my Statement Pants.

Have I made my case for making red, white, and blue the color combination of Summer 2021? I’m interested in hearing about where your focus is these days, style-wise. Are you staying only with what’s current or do you look at what has worked in the past? What details are staples in your wardrobe? And now that Summer has finally arrived, how have your fashion choices changed since this time last year?

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  1. I do like your red dress.I also love those large open sleeves. They make the dress look so breezy and comfortable. Like you, I also don’t have much red in my wardrobe and the only pattern I have are stripes which I usually save for the 4th of July. In fact, I made the stripped top for the 4th. I love red bags and that’s how I usually get my red fix.
    Take care, Terri

  2. Ooooh! Thanks for the feature!

Keeping with the Red-White-Blue theme, I’m submitting today’s art piece, part of an ongoing series that will be exhibited in Pacifica in September. The premise of the show is to do a daily piece of art on a 6×6″ panel for 50 days. Today is Day 6, but who’s counting? (haha).

One of my favorite parts of the Olympics is the Parade of Nations with the teams looking all bright and shiny following their country’s flag. The flags, the uniforms – great pageantry without being militaristic.

Super stylish outfit Rena. The blue is an unusual one and different than the blue in the red white and blue of the UK flag. I like it.

  4. Can’t go wrong with that colorway, and love the flow of the dress with the high low hemline, so flattering.
