Some of my holiday baking took on a new twist this year with sourdough pretzels. Doesn’t that sound like quite the yummy treat? And despite the pun attempt in the title of this post, the making of this deliciousness turned out to be quite easy.
“Guilty as charged” was my first thought when I came across this article on Delish. Like apparently so many others, I’ve made my fair share of banana bread in the past few months and joined the sourdough curious set as well. My success so far with using a homegrown sourdough starter for baking bread and muffins (see Donβt Get Me Started: Up To Scratch) had raised my sights towards further undertakings.
Should you want to make your own attempt, the recipe I followed can be found here. Despite the thinking that making pretzels would be a complicated process, it turned out to go quite smoothly. The dough required only a short resting period so start to finish it took us less than two hours until we had a batch of these delectables fresh from the oven.
Like my other posts on baking with sourdough starter, this is not a step-by-step instructional one. I’ll leave that to those more expert on the matter. It’s my hope that this post, as well as the other two on the subject, would encourage you to broaden your own horizons in baking.
It was at this point that The Husband and I had to take a moment’s pause to figure out how to twist around a rope of dough to create a pretzel. What might appear simple can seem more difficult when actually faced with the challenge. But we figured it out. Too bad we didn’t have a guide drawn on our counter like mall pretzel vendors have on theirs.
Fresh from the oven. Not bad for a first effort if I do say so myself. We made two batches with the plan of sharing these goodies with a few friends we’d be seeing at microbrew that is near where we live. This was back in November when such establishments were still opened. We always stuck to the outdoor patio when enjoying the libations. In any event, the freshly baked (and still warm) pretzels were a huge hit with our friends as well as the other patrons we offered them to.
And that’s the tale of the (k)not so easy adventure of baking sourdough pretzels. It was a fun and delicious journey. To be tried again, for certain. What baking adventures have you been on lately?
Stay well and letβs keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin β¦ all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
