Regardless of current trends, it’s style details like ruffles that can add freshness to an outfit. Even the subtlest use of a design element can bring interest and focus to your look. New to the rotation of blog post themes, Fresh Focus features are intended to highlight details that add style and pop to an outfit.

The magic of ruffles lies in the lightness and movement they add to a garment. Whether a lot or just a bit, ruffles are a definitive feminine detail. Sure, too much might overpower so the key is to be mindful of the placement, fabric, and occasion.

Typically, an overabundance of ruffles isn’t my thing. Too many layers or in the wrong place, ruffles would likely add unwanted extra dimensions to your silhouette. But correctly placed, they can draw the eye away from problem areas and highlight your better features. Sometimes, ruffles are in a contrasting color or pattern which will make them pop. My choice is to have them in the same fabric and/or hue so that their impact is more subtle like the top I shared in Would You, Could You? Button Fly White Jeans.

The dress was a recent purchase. It’s a light cotton blend which is great for the warmer late summer temps but with it’s a darker color, I think that it’ll be a great fall option when paired with boots and a chunky cardigan. I’ve had the denim jacket for a few years and it was a thrift store find that I decided to keep instead of selling on Poshmark. My straw purse has been my go-to handbag choice for most of the summer and to think that I hesitated on buying it. Gladiator sandals with a low wedge heel are very comfortable for all-day wear.

Jacket – J Jill (old, thrifted) option
Dress – Universal Thread
Sandals – Blowfish (old) similar look
Purse – LC Conrad (no longer available) another to consider

Is there a future for ruffles in your wardrobe? What style details are you drawn to? How do you use them to express your individuality? Remember, “there are no rules” and “anything goes” are the modern fashion mantras so you are free to create a style identity that is truly your own.

  1. Love this look! I like ruffles, but sometimes, as I’m short, they end up wearing me! Isn’t a jean jacket just the perfect thing?

Being height challenged myself, I understand the struggle of achieving the right balance in an outfit so as to not make me look shorter. Thanks for stopping and commenting.

  2. Love the jacket a lot. Enjoy September. . . .
